This file format is used to transmit image data. It contains a set of images that can be linked to form an animation. It is used to store non-compressed bitmap images in 24-bit color created using MTV ray tracer.

AVIF is the youngest, but most efficient and advanced codec for image compression. AVIF file size is 10 times smaller than JPEG with the same image quality. AVIF supports not only Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) images but also High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG). It can store both image items and image sequences. AVIF is a HEIF conformant format. Netflix has published the first AVIF image in 2018, but still only a few software support it.
